cracking
   A refining process involving decomposition and molecular recombination of organic compounds, especially hydrocarbons obtained by distillation of petroleum, by means of heat, to form molecules suitable for various uses such as motor fuels, solvents or plastics. Cracking takes places in the absence of oxygen.
